Major investment in Catskill and Athens reinforces Greene County’s growing economic momentum

GREENE COUNTY, NY — Greene County communities will receive $14.2 million in transformational downtown revitalization funding through New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward programs, marking a major win for the Villages of Catskill and Athens and reinforcing Greene County’s emergence as a center of economic momentum in the Hudson Valley and Capital Region.

New York State announced this week that Catskill will receive $9.7 million through the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, while Athens will receive an additional $4.5 million through the NY Forward program. The projects are intended to support downtown redevelopment, housing, business growth, waterfront improvements and public-space enhancements designed to strengthen long-term economic vitality.

For the Greene County Economic Development Corporation (GCEDC), the announcement signals that Greene County’s strategic investments, quality-of-life assets and community vision are gaining statewide recognition. The GCEDC will be managing the small project funds for both villages —administering small-scale grants to improve local businesses.

“This is a defining moment for Greene County,” said James Hannahs, Director of Economic Development, Tourism, and Planning in Greene County. “These awards affirm what residents, businesses and investors already know — Greene County is becoming one of New York’s most dynamic destinations for economic growth, downtown revitalization and quality-of-life investment. The state is recognizing the extraordinary momentum happening here.”

Together, the projects announced for Catskill and Athens represent the majority of funding awarded in this latest Capital Region announcement.

The Village of Catskill’s projects continue the community’s transformation into a vibrant riverfront destination with growing appeal for residents, visitors, artists and entrepreneurs alike.

Village of Catskill Board President Natasha Law said, “Our future is bright and beautifully planned. By combining increased recreation and services with a deep commitment to small business support, walkability, and housing, this DRI slate ensures Catskill remains a destination to live, work, and play.”

Athens’ projects further strengthen the village’s identity as a walkable and historic waterfront community with expanding economic and tourism opportunities.

Village of Athens Mayor Amy Serrago said, “I couldn’t be more thrilled about the projects selected for funding through our NY Forward award. So many great sponsors submitted for inclusion in our strategic investment plan. The final slate will be truly transformative to the village and help to further the growth we’ve already seen in recent years.”

“These are the kinds of catalytic investments that create long-term economic opportunity,” said Patrick Linger, Chair of the Greene County Legislature. “They strengthen our downtowns, support small businesses, attract private investment and help position Greene County as a place where people want to live, work and invest.”
